Short intro

King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It tells the tale of a king who bequeaths his power and land to two of his three daughters, after they declare their love for him in an extremely fawning and obsequious manner. His third daughter gets nothing, because she will not flatter him as her sisters had done. When he feels he has been treated with disrespect by the two daughters who now have his wealth and power, he becomes furious to the point of madness. He eventually becomes tenderly. William Shakespeare - King Lear - William Shakespeare Read By Brian Holland Rose, Brian Holland Rose. King Lear is one of William Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. It was believed to have been written between 1605-1606, and was based on a legend of the Leir of Britain, a pre-Roman Celtic king from mythology. Shakespeare's King Lear brilliantly depicts the senility and increasing madness of its title character as he splits his kingdom into portions for his daughters' based on their false declarations of love for him. King Lear, wanting to retire from the duties the monarchy demands of him, makes the decision to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters. Courting flattery. King Lear is something of a white whale in Shakespeare studies. Critics seem united in proclaiming its greatness, and its powerful, often painful insights into the human condition, but they seem at pains to say why. Samuel Beckett claimed that the play was perfect, and he could therefore say nothing about it. King Lear is profoundly pessimistic and bleak qualities which kept it off the stage for around 200 years, as it was rewritten with a happy ending by Nahum Tate. Its black humor and mingling of sincerity with farce have led some critics to cite it as a forerunner of the Theater of the Absurd movement of the twentieth century. Purchase King Lear . KING LEAR.
