I bought this LP from Amazon US and I received a very bad pressing of this LP - it skips a lot on both sides which is really unbearable to listen to. It doesn't say pressed by Pallas at the back so I guess stay away from non-german pressed version of LP.

This is a great piece of music. Not many words after SEA CHANGE. This record is one of the best in 2010-2020 decade. Beck is full of energy. And 'energy' does not mean 'power'.....'energy' many times in music equals feelings...even soft feelings. This album is full of feelings...full of dreams..... sensitivity...full of that "energy". Thanks Mr. (Beck) Hansen!

Beautifully crafted album, a must have for the pure relaxing, atmospheric guitar and vocals. Very chilled out and moody, in the same vein as Sea Change.

One of those modern classics. Even if you aren't a Beck fan, this is worth a listen. It's a hefty LP and seems to be a quality pressing. It's also a lovely album cover. Would have been nice as a gatefold with additional content, but it's really the music you are after on this one.

I bought a US pressing of this album just recently and love it. I see some comments about surface noise, but my copy seems to be fine. It is quiet music, especially for Beck, so might be worth the investment in a German copy if the US version really is this hit and miss.

I got my LP copy off a record store in Washington DC. Paid a hefty $24 for it which is way more of what I'm willing to shell out for vinyl these days (yes I'm probably cheap), however given my choices, not much of an alternative either. Any serious vinyl collector will know that finding a record with a dead quiet surface is as rare as hen's teeth, even on brand new shrink wrapped vinyl. However this one is, something I'm ecstatically happy about. You should look for the words "Pressed by Pallas Group" or similar on the back sleeve's fine print. Pallas is a German pressing facility and given the fame of the Germans, they don't skimp on the quality control and manufacture and it shows on this record. I won't comment on the music itself as I think there are plenty of sources to sample it online and, well, if you are reading this, you are probably a Beck fan anyway.

I ordered the vinyl in January 2014 and got a first release pressing. The sound is excellent but the vinyl quality is clearly lacking. Endless ticks and pops. This use of either cheap vinyl or dirty stampers is endemic in the US. My suggestion is to return crap quality vinyl as often as possible. There is no other or better way to send a message to the labels-- that when they charge $25 or more for an LP they have a responsibility to provide decent quality control. Pressing plants like United and Rainbo have an abysmal track record. Certain indy labels like Merge records seem wholly unconcerned with the quality of their products and I've nearly given up purchasing vinyl from them as it's VERY bad 90% of the time. I buy hundreds of LP's per year and the patterns of poor quality become obvious at that level. Pressers like QRP and Pallas somehow manage to produce consistently excellent quality releases where you will get a clean quiet pressing at least 90% of the time.If you want vinyl to prosper as a format then my advice is to return every bad copy of any LP you purchase. Demand quality or they will continue to sell you crap with a smile. I've spoken to some label executives (who will remain nameless) who flat out believe we're suckers for buying vinyl at all and actually think that most of their customers could care less about the quality of the vinyl and simply buy their LP's for the covers. Truth is they just don;t care because they do not get enough returns. Beck has more control over his product than most artists and it's extremely disappointing that something as beautiful as Morning Phase is pressed on cheap vinyl by manufacturers that obviously don't give a crap about their final products.

@ WesHeadley I live in Europe and ordered what I thought was the European edition through Amazon UK. Turns out that I got the US pressing?! But it is still manufactured and pressed in EU/Pallas.Are you sure that your copy isn't as well? I know that US pressings often are made East/West coast, but this is probably an all EU pressing?

Dude I agree, been going through this problem with almost every record I've purchased lately and it's seriously making me want to quit vinyl all together. RTI and Pallas are usually pressed well but I haven't noticed great pressings outside of those two companies. SST and Touch and Go press some good ones too, usually anything remastered by Steve albini is a winner. But the majority of vinyls I get seem lousy it is a real shame.
FireWater

I was referring to the US pressed copy. If you have a high resolution system you won't enjoy the music nearly as much on an album like this when there is a backdrop of constant ticks and pops from beginning to end. Like I said-- return them-- it's the only way to get the message across that we expect sound manufacturing processes to be used. Plants like United and Rainbo play games with the labels-- they do deliver quiet test pressings-- I've heard quite a few-- and then once you sign off on them they go back and knock off a bunch of crap pressings as fast and as cheaply as they can. Bait and switch is a way of life for many of these record pressing companies. GZ Vinyl is another example of a company generally unconcerned with quality control-- and they hide behind that "made in the EU" label but are careful not to show their name on the package-- as most serious buyers know, they produce a LOT of crap with the occasional good result.

I agree wholeheartedly. i'd like to see the media bring attention to this problem. All the subpar pressings are ruining the argument that brought the popularity of vinyl back in the first place. that vinyl sounds superior is a joke now.

I'm (very) pleased with this LP. Good record, very good pressing. Beck is cashing in on the old recipes of Sea Change but so what - that's fine with me, it gives us a new Beck album to listen to, Sea Change had become a little old by now. Some tracks sound more mature than Sea Change in fact. Happy happy.(PS : I wish Capitol would re-press some of the Radiohead vinyl vaults series in this same quality standard).

A gorgeous album. As implied by the title, it's perfect morning music. Great for bedtime as well.It is flawed in some ways - most notably, too many parallels to Sea Change, and several melodies and chord changes sound directly lifted from other artists. Then again, being a Beck record raises my expectations to a perhaps unfair degree.I was afraid upon discovering it was just a single LP that it would sound totally smashed. Not so; it does sound quite rich and clear despite 23+ minute-long sides. Packaging is a bit disappointing - for almost $30 (including shipping) I would've expected better than a flimsy outer jacket and the inner sleeve, while plastic-lined, was already splitting on arrival. But the disc itself is very well done.

I really haven't dug into this album seriously yet, but after a few listens I've gotta say that it's a cool listen. Mostly laid-back, mellow songs with a few flourishes mixed in...I don't want to necessarily compare it to Beck's other albums, but saying that it has the same mood as Sea Change is not off-base. I think I'll definitely find myself returning to this one!I have the regular-ol' vinyl US issue (I don't think there were any special editions or anything like that, though) that's 180 gram. I haven't given this a listen on digital media yet, so I can't really compare, but I think it's got an extremely clear, warm sound. Fears that the album wouldn't sound good on a 1-LP release were, I think, premature.

This is yet another great album from Beck, and a more than decent follow-up to his 2002 classic Sea Change. The pressing is first rate...and hats off for placing the album in a very nice protective innersleve. Overall sound quality is just amazing. I rate this album a strong 4 stars.

Quick review after a few listens: The A-side is forgettable. The B-side is significantly more interesting. With a few exceptions, every track is better than the last -- the album starts with a low bar and moves up from there. The final few tracks are excellent. As far as sound quality goes, it is great -- ignore the 2xLP snobs. Though one of the A-side tracks could have easily been cut to provide a little more space and I don't think anyone would have missed anything.

From that same article:"At the other end of the spectrum, there are things to consider when working with bass and low-midrange content destined for vinyl. “Low frequencies use up the most space, especially if they're heavy and constant,” Golden remarks. “Care must be taken to control excessive low end. The lathe can cut it just fine, but if the volume exceeds a certain level, the record could skip when played back.” - See more at: http://www.emusician.com/techniques/0768/mastering-vinyl/134677#sthash.oYs862uB.r6WrJGSp.dpuf"

No the running time is because of volume and noise floor. Length vs. VolumeIn addition, there's a direct correlation between program length and loudness: the shorter a record is, the louder it can be. “There is only so much room to cut the groove,” Golden explains. “The longer the time per side, the smaller the groove needs to be, and the lower the volume must be to make it fit and to prevent skipping.”“A lot of DJs don't want to deal with big volume discrepancies when they're changing records,” says Lyman. “So if you're doing a club track and you want strong levels, definitely keep it under 10 minutes on a 12-inch disc at 45 rpm.”Lyman notes that records produced during the LP's heyday rarely held more than 40 minutes of music — total. “And they sounded great! Because of the CD format, albums are definitely getting longer. These days, LPs are almost always over 45 minutes, as people try to cram more and more onto records. If you have anything over 40 minutes, spread it out; make the investment and do a double-LP release.”The engineers I spoke with recommended putting no more than 16 to 18 minutes of music on a 12-inch record at 33⅓ rpm. “Anything over 18, and you begin to sacrifice sound quality,” Lyman warns. “The longer the disc, the lower the overall volume. When you're cutting a record at a lower volume, the noise floor increases.” (Disc manufacturers often post the recommended playing times for different-sized records at various speeds on their Web sites.)- See more at: http://www.emusician.com/techniques/0768/mastering-vinyl/134677#sthash.oYs862uB.dpuf

The whole "optimal" 40 minutes thing for an album when spread on two sides was largely down to the depth of grooves needed to reproduce deep bass and drum tones i.e. the amount of wax needed. This pressing sounds great.

It's actually SIDE B that's the longer side. 22 minutes and 24 minutes isn't bad, but a 2LP would have been optimal and allowed the album to breathe even more. With this running time they could have done a 45rpm 2LP set. 11 minutes, 11 minutes, 12 minutes and 12 minutes. Perfect! Anything over 20 minutes and you've started sacrificing quality on a 33.3rpm 12" LP. Better noise floor, quieter but more dynamic record. It's not snobbery! :)By the way do you know if the vinyl digital download actually has dynamics? The CD is slammed. Just wondering if the DD that comes with the vinyl is the vinyl mastering.
