Notes
This public performance recording was originally made in 1953 by the technical staff of the Radiotelevisione Italiana, Rome.Short intro
Orchestra The Rome Symphony Orchestra RAI. Soprano Vocals Magda Gabory, Martha Mödl, Sena Jurinac. Tenor Vocals Ludwig Suthaus. 5-discs in box set. The basic sound of the original record was of variable quality but improvements have been effected at the EMI studios in London. While it is appreciated that the overall sound quality of this recording does not compare with today's standards, undoubtedly this great Furtwängler performance should be made generally available to record collectors the world over. Wagner SIEGFRIED WWV 86C Live recording Ludwig Suthaus Julius Patzak Ferdinand Frantz Alois Pernerstorfer Josef Greindl Margarete Klose Rita Streich Martha Mödl. It just cannot compete with the effectiveness of the Bayreuth recordings. The complete Top 5 is from Bayreuth although the terrible news are how much Im ignoring these Rings when it comes to shortlisting one for purchase. The 1953 Bayreuth ones could only compete with Böhm for casting. Wilhelm Furtwängler, Franz Völker, Maria Müller, Margarete Klose, Josef Von Manowarda, Chor und Orchester der Bayreuther festspiele. Olympische Hymne : Völker. Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Orchestra Della Rai di Roma, Orchestra Della Rai di Torino, Wilhelm Furtwängler. Since the end of the forties, Suthaus appeared regularly at the Vienna State Opera and as guest at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London, La Scala, Milan, in Paris, Stuttgart, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, in San Francisco and at Hamburg State Opera. Suthaus was one of Wilhelm Furtwängler's favorite singers toward the end of Furtwängler's life. With Furtwängler, Suthaus sang Berlin, 1947 and recorded Tristan und Isolde 1952 Der Ring des Nibelungen as Siegfried 1953 and Die Walküre as Siegmund 1954 Furtwängler's last opera recording. Richard Wagner, Der Ring de Nibelungen, as Siegfried, RAI, 1953, Wilhelm Furtwängler. I prefer this Rome Ring to the La Scala 1950 Ring. I like Modl and Furtwangler's conducting of the piece, although he is very swift in the La Scala Ring. The Siegfried recordings have a particularly convoluted history in the Potted Ring saga. Initially, HMV released an album of eight discs, combining two from Das Rheingold featured in Volume 1 of our series with six from Siegfried, in recordings made between June, 1927 and April, 1928. This set included the WotanErda duet featured here the only Potted Ring recordings to come from Vienna, as well as six sides with Rudolf Laubenthal as Siegfried. The Recordings. Wilhelm Furtwängler, Orchestra Sinfonica della Radio Italiana. Marek Janowski, Staatskapelle Dresden, Staatsopernchor Dresden. The Vocal Soloists. While for the first part of the opera René Kollos youthful, more brilliant timbre was maybe more adequate than Ludwig Suthaus - but here we need a singer with a voice clearly more mature, hence even just from the character of the voice I prefer Suthaus. As for Ludwig Suthaus as Siegfried: Suthaus is impeccable, both in his voice as in his interpretation - he was one of the best singers certainly for Wagner at the time. Wilhelm Furtwängler. Wagner: Siegfried. Ferdinand Frantz. Conductor, Primary Artist. Josef Greindl. Margarete Klose. Angus McBean. Julius Patzak. Alois Pernerstorfer. The best Wagner recordings asked Wagner scholars, directors, singers and writers to recommend five Wagner CDs or DVDBRs. Here are their recommendations. Kirsten Flagstad, Ludwig Suthaus, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Certainty seems impossible, save for the question of the greatest recorded Wagner interpreter. Can anyone doubt that this would be Wilhelm Furtwängler. There can be few better examples of the work of the legendary Wilhelm Pitzs Bayreuth chorus. Listen out too for Gundula Janowitz and Anja Silja, no less, as Flowermaidens. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg CD Rafael Kubelík, The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. This cycle begs comparison above all with Furtwänglers famous and incandescent recording of the La Scala Ring three years earlier in 1950, yet despite the fact that both live recordings equally bear the hallmark of his genius as a Wagner interpreter, they are conducted quite differently. In Milan, he is more driven and even at times manic, whereas in Rome the mood is broader and more broodingRelated to Wilhelm Furtwängler, Orchestra Sinfonica Di Roma Della RAI, Ludwig Suthaus, Ferdinand Frantz, Julius Patzak, Alois Pernerstorfer, Josef Greindl, Rita Streich, Martha Mödl, Margarete Klose - Wagner: Siegfried, The Ring Of The Nibelung Part III
