Considering it dates from April 1973, you wouldn't think this recording of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde could possibly sound this antique. By that time, tapes of live radio broadcasts had become very sophisticated, and though no match for the superb studio productions of the time, were still more often then not quite listenable. Not so in the case of this Golden Melodram release featuring Carlos Kleiber leading the Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra. Here the sound is harsh and distant, with much too frequent cracks, scratches, and dropouts.
