Nivek Ogre né Kevin Graham Ogilvie is best known as the guttural screech that is synonymous with Skinny Puppy, who arguably invented electro-industrial in the early 80s. I recently spoke with Ogre about such joyful matters as the Fukushima meltdown. It explores themes of deception and mass poisoning. Album Name Weapon

Skinny Puppy doing Synthwave before it was cool! Legendary, I tell you. Especially considering how Synthwave labels are fraud and milking your brains out with the same sounds over and over again! This album was, Afterall, Way ahead of time. Only now was this found out!

Watch out! From best as I can see, you can't tell the difference of a sealed cover between the limited to 1000 - 2013 vinyl release and the limited to 600 - 2016 vinyl reissue. However, the side A inner label on the 2013 pressing is blue where the the 2016 repress side A inner label is red and the matrix run outs are different.

A reasonably good album, but not all is great. Wornin' is pretty "ehh", Survivalisto has this goofy bass synth line that I really dislike, but stuff like Paragun, the redux of Solvent, and Illisit are all worth it.

"The idea for Weapon, although it might seem timely to people seeing it advertised as a new Skinny Puppy album, actually came into fruition during the tour in 2011. We’d met a Guantanamo guard, a kid who was an MP who was shipped off to Guantanamo to become a prison guard basically. He trained for two weeks, and he was a huge Skinny Puppy fan, but while he was there, he heard Skinny Puppy music being used to torture people. So the impetus of the idea was to use Skinny Puppy as a weapon and write a record called Weapon and write it in a way that it could be used as a weapon and used to torture people. We were going to do some information requests and ask for papers or references on what frequencies they use, what was most effective, and we were even going to go the full nine yards and even release an instruction manual with the album on how to use the album to torture people. That would be followed with a tour that will incorporate aspects of the interrogation techniques onstage…" Quoted from Ogre himself in this interview:http://regenmag.com/interviews/skinny-puppy-wielding-new-weapons/very interesting indeed.

Better than the last few records but still a rather boring affair that sounds a bit samey. IMO.

Skinny Puppy returns with a new-found fire and energy on 'Weapon', their debut LP with Metropolis Records. Let's get this out of the way right away: some people are just not gonna like it from the get-go. The "sounds too ohGr" or "sounds too Download" complaints aren't ever going away. Those people are just never going to really like another album this band does, because they refuse to accept that we live in 2013, not 1989. That said, this is a REALLY strong album. A case could be very easily made that this is the best album since their 2004 reformation. It succeeds not because it is a rehash of their old sound, but that it most seamlessly blends both the old and the new in a way that is revitalizing and fresh. It is the least glitchy, most straightforward material since 'The Process', indulging in virtually none of the indulgent IDM excesses that permeated the "SPV trilogy". It is urgent, driving, taught, meaty, and damn-near poppy. A must-have for any true Skinny Puppy fan! INSTANT CLASSIC!!! 5/5

Skinny Puppy return with a new album after a very short break (about 2 years). It's no surprise that it is released on Metropolis Records since SPV's near bankrupcy. And it seems a good placefor the band since Metropolis menaged, on one hand, to release some of SP's side project albums (especially the Vault 2 releases) and, on the other hand, to release more and more quality albums of good artists which do not have a cheesy and corny EBM/Future Pop background (Meat Beat Manifesto, Pop Will Eat Itself). But how does SP sound after a 30 years spanning music career? Well there is always the danger for such long living bands to repeat themselves in their sound or to become a self parody by trying to incoporporate new music trends in their repertoire. SP choosed a go back to their roots. And this decicision was a good one because it nearly removed some of the stranger and cheesier oHgr-sounds from the band's post brake-up/reunion sounds, especially the expanded use of heavy guitars. Back to the roots? Yes indeed, some of Weapons tracks ("Salvo", "Survivalisto" and the rerecording of "Solvent") sound like they were directly taken from Remission or Bites. A very pleasent treat for fans old Puppy. In a recent interview, Ogre explained that "Solvent" didn't get its fair chance on the Remission album because Ogre didn't nail the vocals well, and since he had some singing lessons in the 90's he choosed to cover this track. But don't worry, it has a very good crisp and stands for its own.The usage of old equipment path it's way also through the other tracks like the melancholic mid-tempo track "Wornin", the electro stomper "Plasticage" or the digital madness which is "Tsudanama". The rest of the tracks are solid and seem to be well constructed. The whole album itself feels homogenic and coherent, while the song-writing remains solid. The one thing i would rant about is the album artwork. Steven R. Gilmore should really overthink his latest graphic concepts. He can do it better ones.Meanwhile Weapon marks a welcome return to SP's roots without being a total repetition of their old sounds. A pleasent electro-blast for your ears and angry souls. Give it a try!

since Skinny Puppy reformed there last 3 albums have gotten progressively worse. for a guy like me who feels that Skinny Puppy went downhill after Last Rights its a real interesting concept that when the band does go back and use old equipment and vocal styles what would be the result?at first i didn't think Weapon was all that good just OK but then i found my self listening to the album repeatedly. now i have to say i really like this album its a classic in the sense that it has the classic sound of the very first Skinny Puppy releases so for all those who think Skinny Puppy is not as good as they used to be well here they go back to what they used to be and the results r very good.some tracks on here i swear if they were put on an anthology and labeled 1984 i would of believed it. some tracks sound like they could of been on Remission or Bites.i didn't have much hope for this album after being disappointed with the last 4 Skinny Puppy albums so i wasn't expecting anything good i figured it would be even worse then Handover but its not at all.it would be really interesting if Skinny Puppy in future albums grabed old equipment from all there eras and used them with each release exclusively. i would love to hear what they would do with Too Dark Park equipment and style.well looks like there may be hope for Skinny Puppy after all.

it would be great if you'd actually reviewed the album instead of preemptively insulting those who may not like it as much as you do.
