It compiles all of the band's singles from 1978 to 1990 and features a new track, Don't Ask Me, which was released as a single, reaching number 22 the UK and number 2 on the US Modern Rock chart. Ten years after its release, it was doubtful that a second volume would surface the '90s saw one lone studio release, not to mention a John Lydon solo record, so thankfully Lydon didn't embarrass himself by titling it The Greatest Hits, Volume One. That said, not many outfits under the guise of one name can boast a collection of singles so diverse and ranging in quality. aka PiL, are an experimental band which formed in 1978 in London, England. Its original lineup was John Lydon vocals formerly of the Sex Pistols, Keith Levene guitar and Jah Wobble bass, although by 1983, the band's lineup would become a fluctuating one, revolving around Lydon. PiL are often cited as one of the most challenging and innovative bands of the post-punk period John Lydon is quoted as saying he wanted to form an anti-rock band. Careering and Memories are skeletal art rock based on the atmospherics of dub music and perverse dance grooves. But by the Bill Laswell-produced Rise, PiL was no longer a group but Lydon's personal pop vehicle. I have come late to John Lydon et al through PIL's most recent and superior album This is Pil the title 'Greatest Hits, So Far'. PIL get better as time goes on and so does this album, so that by the time they get to track 5 things start to warm up. The Warrior is, in my opinion, a contender for PIL's best track to date, with lots and lots of energy
