Short intro
From 1982 to 1986, Celluloid Records released about 40 extended-play 12s of then cutting-edge hip-hop, characterized primarily by Linn Drums, the Yamaha DMX keyboard, turntable cutting, and rudimentary rapping. The New York-based label was overseen by Bill Laswell, who was an underground kingpin at the time, co-writing Herbie Hancock's Rockit, co-producing Mick Jagger's solo debut, and fronting Material, among myriad other activities. Looking at depictions of homosexuality in mainstream American movies in The Celluloid Closet, they offer an immensely entertaining, galloping reflection on screen perceptions of lesbians and gay men, from the humorous to the heinous to the heartening. Narrator Lily Tomlins intro then points out that in 100 years of movies, homosexuality has been only rarely acknowledged, mostly as something to get laughs, or inspire fear or pity, conditioning straight peoples ideas about gay people and gay peoples ideas about themselves. Hollywoods first gay stock character to come under the microscope is the effeminate sissyRelated to Various - The Celluloid Years - 12"es And More...
