Short intro
Happy Songs for Happy People is the fourth studio album by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. Happy Songs for Happy People represents a further evolution of Mogwai's toned down, more electronic sound: all songs are based on electric guitars and live drums, but synthesizers are used frequently and often take the main stage on this album, with strings and piano also making the occasional appearance. The songs on the album are subdued, with the only exceptions being the towering Ratts of the Capital, and. Happy Songs for Happy People is the fourth full-length studio album by Mogwai. The songs on the album are subdued, with the only exceptions being the towering Ratts of the Capital, and the closer Stop Coming to My House. Mogwai's usual vocalist Stuart Braithwaite does not sing on this album at all. At first glance, the album title Happy Songs for Happy People seems almost as ironic as the name of their previous album, Rock Action. After listening to the album, however, it's apparent that its title isn't just meant as a joke. Fortunately, though, the new techniques Mogwai explores on this album are just as satisfying, if not more so, than the band's familiar ones: Golden Porsche's richly mellow bass and pianos sound more akin to Americana than post-rock, while I Know You Are But What Am I's shuffling, piston-like rhythm and twinkling synths are both brooding and childlike. When the world comes to whatever ignominious end we choose, Happy Songs for Happy People will be playing somewhere. Still, what a gyp. For the amount of energy Mogwai spend painstakingly carving out wrenching emotional turmoil, lush interludes, and haunting Slint impressions, they've had no idea where to take it since the sensory overload of 1997's Young Team. More intrinsically left-brained types might have used all that overpowering intensity of purpose to cure cancer, or debt, or Staind Mogwai, on the other hand, have a languishing surplus of potential. Some people are down on it but I love most everything these guys have done on their albums. It does things differently which I think is good - what is the point of simply regurgitating a previous effort Personal favourites are Hunted By A Freak, Golden Porsche, Kids Will Be Skeletons, Killing All The Flies, Stop Coming To My House and especially Ratts Of The Capital. In this album, Mogwai basically perfects that formula and makes each song memorable and exciting in their own ways. shablaman54 September 25th 2008
