Short intro
The Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych, is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style and represented a stylistic breakthrough: austerely plaintive, emotionally direct and steeped in medieval modes. It was premièred on 4 April 1977, at the Royan. So where does all this leave this new recording with Alain Altinoglu conducting the Sinfonia Varsovia with soprano Ingrid Perruche A distant third: having neither the beauty of the Zinman recording nor the integrity of the Kamirski, Altinoglu opts for a middle way of more than adequate but less than stellar playing, heartfelt but less than world-class singing and decent if not especially impressive recording. Alain Altinoglu conducts the Sinfonia Varsovia with a pulsing, soulful support for the very fine soloist Ingrid Perruche. Though these artists are all new to this listener, the impact of the work is solid and in some ways feels more honest and probing than the ZinmanUpshaw recording. Or perhaps that is just the familiarity of the work that now allows comparisons when before it was the discovery of Górecki at his most poignant that pushed all else aside. 27 the Symphony No. 3 is Op. 36 that for lovers of Górecki's music is reason enough to add this fine CD to the collection Grady Harp, November 05. 27 Sinfonia VarsoviaAlain Altinoglu. download 10:26.
