A composition from the composer's relatively early period, it is Dutilleux's first purely orchestral composition. It is written in a very classical form four movements, but its language is rather free. It is orchestrated for 85 instrumentalists. The premiere took place at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 7 June 1951, with Roger Désormière conducting the Orchestre National de France. 2 'Le Double': II Andantino Sostenuto. 2 'Le Double': III Allegro Fuocoso - Calmato. Orchestra: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Yan Pascal Tortelier. There are two cyles of Dutilleux's orchestral music - this first one recorded from 1992 to 1997 for Chandos, with Yan Pascal Tortelier leading the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and one recorded by Arte Nova in 2000, 2001 and 2004 with Hans Graf leading the Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra - a French conductor leading an English orchestra, and an Austrian conductor. leading a French orchestra. Tortelier's cycle is superb, and seems to be more widely heard.
