The Symphony No. 3 by Arnold Bax was completed in 1929. It was dedicated to Sir Henry Wood and is perhaps the most performed and most immediately approachable of Bax's symphonies. In addition to the Barbirolli recording, the symphony has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Edward Downes RCA, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Bryden Thomson Chandos, the BBC Philharmonic with Vernon Handley Chandos and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by David Lloyd-Jones Naxos. The Happy Forest 1922. This excellent recording took place in 1996 with David Lloyd-Jones conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Bax wrote seven symphonies, but he has long been unfairly overlooked. He never reached the fame and acceptance attained by countrymen Vaughan Williams and Elgar. Sorry, David Lloyd-Jones just doesn't get Bax. I'm sorry to disagree, but this is a great symphony, agruably Bax's best, in a mediocre performance and murky recording. the tempos are often rushed. Especially disappointing is the all important third movement. I haven't been equally happy with all of David Lloyd-Jones' Bax series, but this 3rd symphony is a winner.
