Short intro

So, Clapton and Marsalis held a series of concerts at New York Citys Jazz at Lincoln Center in April of 2011, the guitarist selecting the songs apart from Layla, performed upon the request of bassist Carlos Henriquez, the trumpeter picking the band and working up the arrangements, using King Olivers Creole Jazz Band as his template yet finding room. The pieces on this Wynton MarsalisEric Clapton album on are not heart-wrenching blues performances, but they're happily executed, writes John Fordham. Clapton's own Layla gets a slow-dirge treatment over solemn drums, the guitarist's canny links and fills throughout the set are often more absorbing than his solos. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis. For this performance, live at Lincoln Center in April 2011, they made a bit of musical history. When Marsalis and Clapton decided on this project, they went after the sound of an early jump-blues band with a New Orleans vibe. This enabled the duo to give themselves latitude in instrumentation.
