Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whom DeccaLondon hired only after they couldn't get Tito Gobbi who was ill or Sherrill Milnes who was recording Don Carlo for EMI, is nevertheless far from negligible as the Scottish king. The supporting singers are all good, and I find Lamberto Gardelli to be the best conductor there is for the early Verdi operas. Gardelli basically presents Verdi's 1865 revision for Paris, which means that we lose Macbeth's death aria but we gain Verdi's best ballet. The recorded sound is excellent, with special praise for the trombones that introduce the scene of the three apparitions. I have heard several enjoyable Macbeth recordings and this one remains my favorite. Album 1971 23 Songs.
