Philadelphia soul, or Philly soul, was a form of soul music that came out of Philadelphia during the mid 1960s. It provided a smoother alternative to the deep soul of the 60s while maintaining the soul and emotion of popular R&B of the time. Philadelphia International Records was one of the most successful labels to capitalize on this new genre, and took it to the international stage with acts like the O'Jays and Teddy Pendergrass. Feelin' Good At The Cadillac Club. Billy Paul. The Sound of Philadelphia is a two-disc collection of the R&B and soul music that Philadelphia was putting out in the '70s. What is most interesting about this collection is how much of the music was produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the two men who crafted the Philadelphia sound as it was developing.
