Short intro

This compilation covers a multitude of songs from the tradition, from both semi-current paniolos and earlier composers including Queen Liliu. The album covers a good deal of the various subgenres in the tradition, including an earlier chant, some slack key guitar work, and some denser compositions for ukuleles with accompaniment. Any fan of softer guitar work would be pleased by the Hawaiian styles and their relaxed tunings and playing forms. Oral tradition in various families states that numbers of fingering holes ranged from one to four, and location of the holes varied depending on the musical taste of the player. Though primarily a courting instrument played privately and for personal enjoyment, it also could be used in conjunction with chants, song, and hula. September 19, 1997. Exclusive Prime pricing. "Songs of the Hawaiian Cowboy Na Mele O Paniolo," unfortunately, is out of print. Kumu hula and musician Nani Lim Yap produced this beautiful and historically important anthology of Hawaiian songs that celebrate the cowboy life in the western-most state of the United States. Her brother, Sonny Lim, (PAN as Elmer "Kohala" Lim) served as lead musician, doing many of the feature vocals, providing backing vocals, and playing slack-key guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, and ukulele. Leabert Lindsey, a genuine paniolo (cowboy) also sings key songs. Herb Kawainui Kane graced the front cover with his artwork, possibly with Clyde "Kindy" Sproat being the model for the cowboy with the small guitar or 8-stringed ukulele on horseback. If you can find this CD, it will be a fine addition to any collection.
