Short intro

De Mello has taken mostly early 20th-century Japanese compositions, which were written under the influence of Western orchestral music, and added traditional Japanese instruments. The result is a fairly typical mess of exoticism diluted by mushy strings. It is of a piece with Les Baxter's quasi-exotic easy-listening albums. One attractive touch, however, is the use of eerie, abstract, exotic, female voice. Also, as is usually the case with Music of Polynesia productions, the gatefold jacket, art, and liner notes are intriguing. Japanese folk music given a 60s easy listening treatment.
