Short intro
The 19 tracks that make up this collection from the Library of Congress' Endangered Music Project are just as raw as you would expect from field recordings made in the middle of the 20th century. But they are also an invaluable document in the history of African musical traditions. In 1949, American writer Arthur S. Alberts undertook a 4,000 mile, six month tour of West Africa, in a jeep filled with up-to-the-minute recording equipment. While most folklorists go into the field with a pretty clear idea of what they're looking for, Alberts appears to have recorded and documented anything he came across, whether it was traditional in nature or not. A musical exploration of West Africa from the late 1940s, this Endangered Music Project compilation is comprised of 19 songs culled from an enormous archive by recordist Arthur S. During a six-month, 4,000-mile jeep tour of West Africa in 1949, Alberts recorded a broad range of musics using state-of-the-art equipment for the time. The album features popular music found in clubs and cafés, sacred songs, work songs, and school childrens chants. This anthology, with its rich and varied styles of singing, percussion, hand-claps and other instruments, highlights the depth and diversity of West African music. Login with. Alberts took a six-month, 4,000-mile tour of West Africa in a jeep rigged with high-tech recording equipment. While most recordists of the day tried only to find and capture tribal music untouched by western influences, Alberts was interested in broadly documenting African music of every type. This included popular music found in clubs and cafés, sacred and ritual songs, work songs, and school childrens chants.
