Short intro

Forth is the fourth and most recent studio album by the English alternative rock band The Verve before their third break up in 2009. It was released internationally on 25 August 2008 on EMI, and a day later in North America on the On Your Own label. The band reformed in 2007, having broken up in 1999. Forth is their first album of new material since their 1997 album Urban Hymns, and their first album since their 1995 album A Northern Soul to feature the original line-up, without their second guitarist. The Verve's fourth album manages not to collapse under the weight of Richard Ashcroft's ego - just. In stoned psychedelic texture and brooding atmosphere, Forth recalls the Verve's first two albums, A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul. Legend has it that both of those were recorded under the influence of copious quantities of drugs. No one is confessing whether stimulants were involved in the making of Forth. But with several songs meandering past the six- or seven-minute mark, you suspect that no one in the room was sober enough to press the off button. The second Verve reunion album, released 11 years after the last one, finds them still trying to be the biggest band in the world- and still failing. What else could the parting skies and emergent God rays on Forth's cover mean but that He hath returned To be fair, musically speaking, about half of Forth is as good as the band's commercial breakthrough, Urban Hymns- and, if you consider the general hitmiss ratio of decade-removed comeback albums, that's actually a pretty respectable showing.
