Ronnie Lee Milsap born January 16, 1943 is an American country music singer and pianist. He was one of country music's most popular and influential performers of the 1970s and 1980s. He became one of the most successful and versatile country crossover singers of his time, appealing to both country and pop music markets with hit songs that incorporated pop, R&B, and rock and roll elements. His biggest crossover hits include It Was Almost Like a Song, Smoky Mountain Rain, There's No Gettin. Maynard Ferguson is a 1971 big band jazz album by Canadian jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. The album was originally released on Columbia Records as Columbia 31117. It was also released in the UK by CBS under the name Alive & Well in London. The album largely consists of arrangements of popular songs of the period along with one original composition. While he merely dipped his toes in the waters of pop music for his first Columbia release M. Horn Eli's Comin', MacArthur Park, on this album. What's fascinating about this album is that it presents a gifted and versatile singer and pianist that could have pursued any number of paths based on this record - and that it's possible to hear the path he took and the one that he didn't within the confines of this debut. And what's doubly fascinating is that those two paths add up to a musically cohesive album in their own right, making this album an excellent debut on its own terms, even if Ronnie Milsap didn't make Ronnie Milsap into a star.
