Short intro
Metamorphosis is the third compilation album of the Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records who usurped control of the band's DeccaLondon material in 1970 after the band's departure from Decca and Klein. Released in 1975, Metamorphosis centres on outtakes and alternate versions of well-known songs recorded from 1964 to 1970. Metamorphosis is both interesting and embarrassing, a curio and an outrage. Its 14 tracks consist of jams, outtakes, alternate takes and primitive versions of songs the Rolling Stones later revised into more polished numbers, all recorded roughly during their first six years. But one cant really call it a Rolling Stones album. Many of the cuts are silly and weak, but anyone who has been following the real metamorphosis of the Rolling Stones over the last decade can look at these tracks as experiments, jokes, curious artifacts and at worst, nice tries, all infused with the mysterious energy of that elemental Stones consciousness. Album 1975 16 Songs. Mostly these are demos of Jagger-Richards songs meant to pitch to other performers, sung by Jagger with session musicians including future Zeppelin-ites Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones and sometimes Stones sideman Nicky Hopkins rather than the actual Stones. And it's not bad at all: An orchestral Out of Time a U. hit for Chris Farlowe with the same backing track, an alternate Memo From Turner different from Mick's version from the movie Performance, a Bill Wyman outtake from the Beggars Banquet sessions and Stevie Wonder's I Don't Know Why. But where Metamorphosis differs is that it consists completely of studio material unavailable elsewhere including possibly the meagre sum total of the album-session outtakes remaining from the sixties. These include a cracking cover of Chuck Berrys Dont Lie To Me with rollicking piano by Ian Stewart, and the stomping, Motownish original Try A Little Harder , both of which inexplicably got left off their 1964 LP releases a strange alternative take on Heart Of Stone with pedal steel by Jimmy Page a funky alternative punt to that used.
