The groups last record, 2014s Brill Bruisers-a brisk, dance-pop nod to the Brill Building-was a turning point for Cases role in the band. Newman does not feature Dan Bejar he was working on music for a Destr. Whiteout Conditions is an amazing album that blends the Brill Bruisers powerpop and indienew wave with more electronicsynth-pop, and psychedelic with a higher emphasis on spacial ambiance, vocal melodies, and almost krautrock-like musical breaks and transitions. Every song is nearly overwhelming, but not in an intense way as BB was. Calling the New Pornographers' music smart pop almost underestimates the group there's smart, and then there's these folks, whose cleverness suggests their tunes got their undergrad degree at Yale and did their master's at Harvard. But A. Newman and his crew also have a keen understanding of the mindbody conundrum - they want their music to be as intelligent as they are, but they also want it to feel good. It's hard to imagine a band that abhors a long, throat-clearing windup more than The New Pornographers. The New Pornographers' first album, Mass Romantic, came out all the way back in 2000 - and Newman was making nifty power-pop records with Zumpano for years prior to that - so the band would be forgiven for receding into legacy-act status at some point. Instead, its catalog just gets more formidable: now seven albums strong, with as little patience for filler as ever
