Short intro

Faith is the third studio album by English rock band the Cure, released on 14 April 1981 by Fiction Records. The album saw the band continuing in the gloomy vein of their previous album Seventeen Seconds 1980, which would conclude with their next album Pornography 1982. Preceded by the single Primary, the album was well-received by critics and was a commercial success in the UK, peaking at number fourteen on the UK Albums Chart and staying on the chart for eight weeks. The Cure's 1981 album Faith is the group's fourth release. This album has a darker tone compared to earlier works by the band and can be said to be a gateway album between the minimalistic post-punkness of Three Imaginary Boys & Seventeen Seconds and the wall of sound synth-goth of Pornography. But it's not all gloomy keyboards and minimalist percussion, Faith is also a milestone for Robert Smith lyrically, branching out into questions of faith and spirituality he never quite touched on so well ever again. A depressing record, certainly, but also one of the most underrated and beautiful albums the Cure put together. They would not touch on this sort of lush sadness so well again until 1989's Disintegration. Track Listing. Writing sessions for Faith followed a dark period for The Cure. Its initial demos were upbeat, with Robert Smith later sharing Faith was going to be a very positive record. But after each band member had a family member die, and friends of the band grew upset with the bands success theyd become too big to play in the old pubs theyd once frequented, writing took a dark turn one night when Smith wrote both The Funeral Party and All Cats Are Grey.
