The Coldstream Guards Band was one of the very first British army bands to make a recording before World War I. On 18 June 1944 over one hundred twenty people were killed in the chapel at Wellington Barracks when a German flying bomb hit the chapel. The director of the band was included in those killed, prompting a new man, Captain Douglas Arthur Pope, to be appointed. In 1960, the band started a new tradition, to tour from coast to coast of the United States of America, each ten years. This tradition still takes place. The Band of the Grenadier Guards is one of the bands in the British Army. In 1685 Charles II allowed the band to maintain 12 hautbois oboe players. His death in 1685 was so significant for the band that until the Second World War, the Bass Drummer known officially as The Regimental Timebeater, wore a black armband in mourning of the king's death. It remains the largest single march music record series in history, featuring close to 3,000 different marches. The records were distributed for free by march collector Robert Hoe and the series was continued after his death by the Robert Hoe Foundation created by his wife, Marilyn C. Most records featured the marches of two composers one per side played by a military, college, high school. Volume 3 features the marches of Fred Jewell & Hermann Blankenburg. Volume 4 features the marches of William P. Chambers & Arthur W. Sadly many of these were lost during the allied bombings of WW2 and what remains is small fraction of the whole. The US Navy Band is inspired in the performance of these marches.
