Chasny's music is largely guitar-based and is often considered new folk however, it includes obvious influences, marked by the use of drones, chimes, and eclectic percussive elements. He records albums for Drag City and Holy Mountain, among other labels. Chasny is also a member of the psychedelic band Comets on Fire, and has working relationships with Badgerlore, Current 93, and Magik Markers. His newest project is. The Sun Awakens is the record he's been promising. Where School of the Flower was a leap, placing his singing and guitar playing in equal measure - though there were numerous instrumental pieces - The Sun Awakens is the place they burst forth, fully entwined, completely formed. If anything, Chasny's vocals on this set are the most moving and sophisticated of his career. The Sun Awakens is the most layered and realized studio album Chasny's yet made, and the first where his vocal style can be said to add rather than detract. It's thick, occasionally very pretty, and references any number of musicians from John Fahey and Popol Vuh to Ennio Morricone.
