Short intro

These 1970s cuts were recorded when Keita and fellow Guinean guitarist Kante Manfila were helping to revolutionize African music by blending traditional rhythms with Caribbean and Latin beats. The resulting convergence yielded a fresh, invigorating, influential hybrid. Classic ode to president Sékou Touré Guinea by Les Ambassadeurs featuring singer Salif Keita and guitarist Manfila Kanté. At eight, he began playing balafon a large wooden xylophone alongside his father and soon secretly began playing a cousin's guitar. He gave up school at 14, when he was sent to live with an uncle in Abidjan, where he began to earn money playing traditional pieces on balafon and guitar at festivities. Les Ambassadeurs' main competitors were the Rail Band, who featured Salif Keita and Mory Kanté. However, rivalry between the two singers caused Keita's defection to Les Ambassadeurs that same year. Musical partners since the late '60s, first in the Rail Band and then in Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Keita and Manfila seem to be moving away from that group's somewhat westernized Afro-pop sound with these sessions. Salif Keïta IPA: born August 25, 1949 is an afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is notable not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa but also because he has albinism. He is a member of the Keita royal family of Mali. Salif Keita was born a traditional prince in the village of Djoliba. He was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism, a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. In 1967, he left Djoliba for Bamako, where he. I love Salif Keita. He truly an original as legendary as his great grand father Soundiata Keita. I love all his songs. Read more. This album is a gentle, acoustic set, but rather thinly recorded, and which shows neither Salif Keita nor Kante Manfila to their best advantage. Most of what is on here has been redone better elsewhere, with better sound. And one can see why it was not broadly released in the first place. I like this sort of stuff, so I have given it a good rating, but it is really not in the stone cold classic category of the great Salif albums like Mouffou or Soro or Amen or Folon. For those who have heard the Les Ambassadeurs or the Hot Rail Band albums, it is
