Saint-Saëns wrote five symphonies. The first pair are student works never given Opus numbers they are quite delightful. When Saint-Saëns was just 18 the official first appeared, followed by the Bizetesque second at age 24, with the well-known third the Organ Symphony many years later. This Brilliant Classics release offers us the classic HMVEMI recordings made in Paris between 1972 and 1974 by the Orchestre National de l'ORTF conducted by Jean Martinon. Whilst the recordings are very good, having been made at the height of the analogue era, they are occasionally a bit over-reverberant, but not enough to worry about. The Orchestre National de Lyon ONL is a French orchestra based in Lyon. Its primary concert venue is l'Auditorium de Lyon. The orchestra operates with the help of a subsidy from the French Ministry of Culture and from the Rhône-Alpes regional council. The current general director of the orchestra is Aline Sam-Giao. The orchestra's precursor was the Société des Grands Concerts de Lyon, which Georges Martin Witkowski established in 1905. Witkowski directed the society's concerts from 1905 to 1943
