Rudolf Serkin - Beethoven Sonata No. 8 in C Minor Op. 13 Album
Short intro
Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique to Beethoven's liking by the publisher, who was impressed. The Pathétique was famous right from the moment it was performed, and its not hard to see why it contains three incredibly attractive movements with Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13 Pathetique: II. Beethoven's Sonata No. 8 in C minor Pathétique is my favorite of his piano sonatas. The thing with Beethoven is that he is transitional between the Classical and Romantic ages, and his works, accordingly, can be interpreted in either direction. Having a strong inclination toward the latter, I have been disappointed in the past by renderings that were much too Classical in the narrow sense. I am happy to report that Serkin's interpretation is very good. He catches the emotion and fury without becoming bombastic a perpetual danger in interpreting Beethoven. This is on. Seemingly posing a question, or struggling to overcome a dilemma, the music seeks resolution and relief. The second movement begins with a soothing, languid, melancholy melody of an autumnal beauty. Dominating the entire movement, this initial theme eclipses both the subdued second theme and the moment of dramatic tension in the middle section of the movement. The Rondo finale is really the second Rondo in the sonata, since the middle movement possesses the structural features of that formRelated to Rudolf Serkin - Beethoven Sonata No. 8 in C Minor Op. 13
