The landmark recording Patato & Totico belongs neither entirely to rhumberos nor to jazzers. The musical style will feel very familiar to those familiar with Cuba's rhumba tradition, which springs from the ritual songs of Yorubans and their descendants who found themselves sold into servitude to Cuba's sugar and tobacco plantations. In 1954 he emigrated from La Habana to New York City where he continued his prolific career as a sideman for several jazz and Latin music ensembles, and occasionally as a bandleader. He invented and patented the tunable conga drum which revolutionized the use of the instrument in the US. Tito Puente once called him the greatest conguero alive today.
