Short intro

Standing Ovation at Newport is a live album by American jazz flautist Herbie Mann recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1965 with one track from an earlier performance at The Village Gate for the Atlantic label. Patato Dave Pike - 8:21. Stolen Moments Oliver Nelson - 9:35. Mushi Mushi Herbie Mann - 6:02. The performance by Herbie Mann's group was one of the high points of the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival. This album includes Mann's Mushi Mushi from an earlier date, but it is the lengthy versions of Patato, Stolen Moments, and particularly the encore Comin' Home Baby from Newport that are most memorable. This taken from a CD reissue. It sounds great and the playing on here is the best. Herbie is playing with a fantastic group including Chick Correa and Dave. Album 1965 4 Songs. However, track 3, Mushi Mushi was recorded almost six weeks prior to Newport at the Village Gate in NYC and it has the same level of energy and excitement. I have to conclude that this was a very special period in Mann's career and I do not conclude that lightly because some of his 1950s recordings are among my favorites too. Herbert Jay Solomon April 16, 1930 July 1, 2003, better known as Herbie Mann, was an American jazz flautist who had an interest in traditional music of other cultures. Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York. Early in his career, he played saxophone and clarinet, but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preminent flautist during the 1960s. I have a version (STA-A-65735/6 PR....red and green label) that looks to be at pressed at Presswell. However, I am not positive it is a 1975 pressing as the label has 1841 Broadway address and no Warner Brothers logo. Vinyl is quiet and the live recordings at Newport and the Village Gate are excellent and exciting. (Matrix Side 1: STA-65735-D LW P AT W; Side 2: STA-65736-A LW AT W). Great musicianship is on display (including Chick Corea on piano). Seems like this record can be found for very little money (even the earlier issues). This issue is definitely recommended.
