Majesty It's amazing how the floodgates open when you shut out all the internal and external noise, stop pandering to stereotype, cease listening to your anxieties, and disregard the compartment society has built for you. I'm Not Your Man, the Charlie Andrew Alt-J, Rae Morris-pro. Marika Hackman made a very savvy choice when she chose Boyfriend as both the opener and lead single for I'm Not Your Man - savvy because the album makes a pretty seismic shift from the nu-folk of her debut. It's a damn sight noisier for a start, requiring a full band setup. Handily, she happens to be pals with London-based group the Big Moon, who act as her backing band for the record. Then in February came Marika Hackmans contribution, a sly Britpop power-play about stealing a mans girlfriend from under his nose because the poor dolt believes a woman really needs a man to make her scream. Its one of the years sharpest singles: a funny, sexy rebuke to ignorant blokes, and an excellently produced throwback. London four-piece the Big Moon back Hackman on her follow-up Im Not Your Man, and producer Charlie Andrew has balanced the sound of five women playing in a room with details that enhance the records sense of menace. Hackmans second album Im Not Your Man was made over 18 months during a time of transition. She changed both her manager and her label so that she could make the kind of music always wanted to play. On the album she explores her sexuality and relationships with women. The new music style and subject matter were a change from her previous releases but she was more curious than worried about her fans reactions, as she told Interview magazine: I was not worried, but I was intrigued to see how it was going to go down because obviously it is a different sound.
