The release of Tribal Voice marked an important step in the development of Australian music. It was the first time that an Aboriginal recording artist had received serious public recognition, to the extent that a song from this album, Treaty, became an Australian hit. Yothu Yindi's music is a strange mixture of influences, ranging from the haunting traditional instruments and singing on tracks like Gapu, to the modern rock of Treaty and Tribal Voice. Music is central to my training and career as a musician and ethnomusicologist. Ive studied music of one kind or another since the age of four, and so I have many favourite albums and artists. But one special album - Tribal Voice - has shaped me so much more than any other, and set the course of my life and work. It was the brainchild of Yothu Yindi, a band with roots in the former Methodist mission town of Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in northeast Arnhem Land. This is a remote part of Australia with an Indigenous majority population that comprises the traditional homelands of the Yolŋu p. Yothu Yindi's 1992 Tribal Voice has the special honor of causing the Australian government to respect Aboriginal Australian's right to their land as miners attempted to uproot it. Their top hit, Treaty was created to raise awareness that the Australian government was breaking their treaty with the native people. This creates a full album experience that switches back and forth between traditional sounds, modern music, and fusion. DJapana - radio mix is a great addition to my workout playlist. The album is diverse and entertaining throughout, and a great primer for those looking to experience world music and fusion. Album 1992 16 Songs. World , 1992.
