The result is a collection of tunes - some traditional, some written specifically for the album by Roberts and Morrison - providing a stirring and spirited listening experience, particularly when the pair, backed up by an able ensemble of bass, fiddle, and drums, kicks up some dust on swirling, stomping numbers like Larach do Thacaidean and Hion Dail-a Horo Hi. The album also connects these traditional Gaelic songs with the worldwide folk tradition. Alasdair Roberts born 8 August 1977 is a Scottish folk musician. He released a number of albums under the name Appendix Out and, following the 2001 album The Night Is Advancing, under his own name. Roberts is also known for his frequent collaborations with other musicians and writers, as well as for being a member of the folk supergroup The Furrow Collective. Album 2012 12 Songs. Alasdair Roberts and Mairi Morrison are part of a golden generation of Scots performers bringing new light to bear on folk music. The pair dovetail beautifully on the mostly traditional ballads and work-songs which make up Urstan. Far from slavish or spartan, the arrangements blend wind and string instruments with a jazzy undertow of bass, intriguing brass-band colouration and dramatic drums to create music of great depth and originality: for instance, when rhythmic mouth-music is incorporated into Làrach do Thacaidean, the result is a sort of Gaelic rockabilly. A collaboration between Alasdair Roberts and Mairi Morrison exploring Celtic folk songs, mostly sung in Scots Gaelic. They released the LP Urstan on Drag City in 2012. View wiki. The album sprung from a meeting between Highlands-raised Roberts, whos often to be found seeking out stories and songs at Edinburghs School of Scottish Studies, and Isle of Lewis-born Gaelic singer Morrison at Glasgows Gaelic arts-promoting Ceols Craic club. The payoff, which includes two original songs, is invigorating. These love and waulking songs one of them originally sung by women weaving tweed are expansive, joyful, mysterious things. Fans of Alasdair Roberts's work will find a lot to enjoy here - this is a dense, multi-layered album, with satisfying and rich melodies as well as his trademark quirkiness Morrison's contributions often come through assertively and abruptly, but they are a nice compliment to his style.
