Grave robber Roberts circles the elders with suspicion, fascination and adoration. Too Long In This Condition Not half long enough We're betting that in another thousand years, the sky-creatures that inherit our burnt orb'll be taking these tunes and singing them in their own throatless style, seeking to crack the codices and unravel the mystery of men. released June 29, 2010. It doesnt feel like a fastidiously researched academic treatise but a warm, accessible continuation of the tradition that delights with every listen, and sits a million miles from the nouveau tractor cognoscenti. Alasdair Roberts is keen to emphasise the relevance of the traditional folk ballads featured in Too Long In This Condition: it comes with an explicatory musing on timelessness from Wittgenstein's Tractatus, and a sleevenote which refers to the passing-on of ballads as a game of memoried tig come fluid form of existential relay, which just about nails it. So do Roberts' interpretations of love songs such as Barbara Allen and murder ballads such as Long Lankin and Little Sir Hugh, the latter's xenophobic undertones driven by fatalist. Alasdair Roberts sixth proper album, an 11-track, upper level course on contemporary and traditional Scottish balladry, begins with a tale that concerns a cheating wife being escorted to Hell by Satan himself on his own ghost ship. Daemon Lover may sound like a downer, but Roberts sprightly guitar work and amiable delivery make it sound more like a campfire ghost story than a cautionary tale of the pitfalls of adultery. Scotsman Alasdair Roberts is a cult hero thanks to his highly individual, bleak or quirky songs with influences that range from ancient Celtic ballads to Robin Williamson and to his equally original treatment of traditional songs. Last year, he released an album of his own material, Spoils. Now comes a new and typically surprising album of folk songs. It's unexpected not only because of the songs he chooses which include folk favourites such as Barbara Allen, The Golden Vanity and Long Lankin but also the jaunty backing for what are often tragic or gory lyrics
