Short intro
Gimme Back My Bullets is the fourth studio album by the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released on February 2, 1976. It reached 20 on the U. albums chart. The album was certified Gold on January 20, 1981 by the RIAA. The album was originally titled Ain't No Dowd About It, in tribute to the producer Tom Dowd, whom the band idolized. It remains the only studio album by the pre-crash lineup to have not yet reached platinum or higher in the United States, though it did include minor hits Gimme. The band had switched producers, hiring Tom Dowd, the producer who served Atlantic's roster so well during the label's heyday. Unfortunately, he wasn't perfectly suited for Skynyrd, at least at this point in their history. Songs in album Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Back My Bullets 1976. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Back My Bullets. According to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington in a 1992 Goldmine interview, this song is about the bullets Billboard charts use to signify a song is moving quickly up the chart. If a song is 12 with a bullet, it is at 12 but will probably go higher next week. This song was about regaining dominance on the music charts, but Gimme Back My Bullets was the weakest selling album of Skynyrd's career to that point. It was their fourth release, and the first produced by the famous Atlantic Records engineer Tom Dowd, who was allowed to produce two bands outside of Atlantic every year Skynyrd was on MCA. This was never released as a single. There was a time when Lynyrd Skynyrds music was tough. It had drive and force it was impossible to ignore. But last years Al Kooper-produced Nuthin Fancy revealed the bands soft underbelly and Gimme Back My Bullets, produced by Tom Dowd, is an extension of its predecessor. It starts strong but fails to deliver. The title track is powerful - relentless, a little dangerous - with lead guitar wailing urgently behind one of the angriest Ronnie Van Zant vocals yet recorded.
