Short intro
Transformer is the second solo studio album by American recording artist Lou Reed. The album is considered an influential landmark of the glam rock genre, anchored by Reed's most successful single, Walk on the Wild Side, which touched on then-controversial topics of sexual orientation, gender identity, prostitution, and drug use. Produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson, the album was released in November 1972 by RCA Records. Though Reed's self-titled debut solo album had been. Transformer - Lou Reed. In a historic collaboration, Londons Glam Rock icons, David Bowie and Mick Ronson joined New York City Proto-Punk Lou Reed to create the album that is Lou Reed's breakthrough second solo album, released in December 1972. Unlike its predecessor Lou Reed, eight songs of which were leftovers from his Velvet Underground days, this album contains mainly new material. However, there are still a few songs that date from his VU days-Velvet Underground-recorded versions of Andy's Chest and Satellite of Love surfaced in 1985 and 1995, respectively and New York Telephone Conversation and I'm So Free are known to have been played during the Velvets' run at Max's Kan. With Transformer, Lou Reed got VU fan and influential glam rock artist David Bowie and Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson to produce and backup sing on the album. With classics like Walk On The Wild Side, Perfect Day, Vicious, and Satellite of Love, lots of people consider this to be Lous finest work and many including Rolling Stone have cited this as one of the greatest albums of all time. Lou Reed would later create classic albums such as Berlin, Street Hassle, New York, Coney Island Baby, Rock and Roll Animal, and Blue Mask. Transformer Q&A. On Transformer Reed revisits beloved New York sounds for a new age: cabaret, doo-wop, jazz. And yet he recorded most of this distinctly New York album in London-Marc Bolan, Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Roxy Music, and others were all looting rock 'n' roll of the past like they were raiding the thrift store for as much pose and artifice as they could get their hands on. Reed plays along, sounding playfully cheeky on the opener, Vicious, and never looking back. When it came out, a lot of male rock writers dismissed Transformer as a sellout, a cash-in on the new androgyny trend. Lou Reed - Transformer 1972. To favorites 20 Download album. Listen album. Reed was at a crossroads, unsure of which direction to take his newfound independence. At the same time, a new trend was emerging across the pond. Glam rock began to flower in 1971, and by the following year had swept up countless British kids, turning them from restless, discontended youths to consummate, androgynous hipsters decked out in platforms, sequins and imposing hair. That the album would also give Reed an unlikely Top 20 pop hit via the teasing, twisted sexuality of Walk on the Wild Side is but one of its deep, rewarding ironies. Indeed, as produced by David Bowie and guitarist and cohort Mick Ronson at the height of their own Ziggy Stardust fame, Reed's songs are cast in a seductive cabaret setting that's more Jacques Brel than Lower East SideRelated to Lou Reed - Transformer
