The Concerto sounds nothing like Apocalypse and nothing like jazz, although McLaughlin does improvise in certain sections. It is, however, yet another validation of McLaughlin's versatility as a musician and a composer-arranger. The orchestra drowns out his acoustic guitar at times, but his presence is still palpable. I had the pleasure of seeing the 1986 world premiere of the Concerto, featuring McLaughlin and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece was very well received by the crowd and by local classical music critics. All in all, the album is yet another impressive example of John McLaughlin's ability to occupy many musical worlds. Extrapolation is the debut album by English jazz guitarist John McLaughlin. It was recorded at Advision Studios in London on 18 January 1969 and released later that year in the UK by Marmalade Records. The label was owned by producer Giorgio Gomelsky and distributed by Polydor Records. In 1972 the album was re-issued following McLaughlin's success as the leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. It reached No. 152 in the United States on the Billboard magazine album chart. Re-issues of the album are on the. Track Listings. Disc: 1. Here is the emotional impact that is missing from the concerto, and the instrumentalists are having real dialogs, and not simply reproducing a rote exchange from a script. And I suppose that McLaughlin can always write another concerto, if he seriously wants to come up to the admittedly high bar of the Rodrigo Aranjuez. Or perhaps he should stick to the smaller, improvisiatory forms that he seems to know best Read more. Shakti with John McLaughlin 1975. Mahavishnu 1984. Where Fortune Smiles 1971. Molom 1994. McLaughlin's primary influence to my ear is not the obvious Rodrigo, but Aaron Copland. McLaughlin's compositional style here often features sweeping grandiose crescendos, giving much of the piece an epic movie soundtrack feelRelated to John McLaughlin - "Mediterranean" Concerto
