According to Paul Stumps McLaughlin biography Go Ahead John , John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana met together in 1971. During that encounter, McLaughlin introduced Santana to his guru. To paraphrase from Walter Koloskys 2002 review of the album, McLaughlin persuaded Clive Davis to let the collaboration happen.
