Short intro

Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard is the tenth album by jazz musician John Coltrane and his first live album, released in February 1962 on Impulse Records, catalogue A-10. It is the first album to feature the members of the classic quartet of himself with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. In contrast to his previous album for Impulse, this one generated much turmoil among both critics and audience alike with its challenging music. Recorded at The Village Vanguard, NYC, November 2 and 3, 1961. Live At the Village Vanguard - John Coltrane. Parties wishing to hear the run in its entirety are encouraged to check out the multi-disc Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings 1997 as there are multiple takes of the same songs. This allows even the most unsophisticated jazz consumer the opportunity to note the difference in the various versions, while contrasting the player's widely diverse performance styles. Live From Village Vanguard1966. Исполнитель: John Coltrane. My endless question with this recording is that all the songs that Coltrane did at this gig and was it for one night. Coltrane's 1961 Village Vanguard engagement is legendary - both for the quality of the music and for the controversy it generated at the time. This reissue contains the Live at the Village Vanguard album, nothing more, nothing less, and to my mind offers a very poor value for most listeners. There is another release - the Village Vanguard Master Takes - that offers the 3 tracks here, plus two others India and Impressions. John Coltrane may have made more stirring albums than Live at the Village Vangaurd, but he never made a more important one. It is not his playing, or his new band's, which did far better work later. It is not the songs he picked. Songs in album John Coltrane - Live At The Village Vanguard Again 1966. John Coltrane - Naima. John Coltrane - Introduction To My Favorite Things. Coltrane enters in high gear but with high lyricism as well. Sanders drops by for another solo of searing intensity and a furious duel with Coltrane, where the bass clarinet and flute appear, at some distance in the storm. Here the overall performance is perhaps less effective than the calmer but much longer nearly one hour version recorded on Live in Japan certainly it's worlds away from the 1960 Atlantic original or any of the previous live versions. This CD is worth the price for the breathtaking Naima. My Favorite Things has its moments, too. Album information.
