Lateness of Dancers, named for a Eudora Welty short story, marks a transition commercially, if not creatively: Taylors first three albums were issued by North Carolina upstart Paradise of Bachelors, but this new one is his first for Merge. Taylor may have recorded these songs well before he signed that contract, but compared to previous albums, the arrangements on Lateness are airier, the tempos bouncier, the playing brisker. Lateness of Dancers - its title taken from a Eudora Welty story - retains that source's earthiness as it engages everything from folk, country-rock, back-country fiddle music, and even Southern R&B, the latter by way of an electric piano whose use recalls Muscle Shoals and Stax. Taylor is accompanied by longstanding partner and bassist Scott Hirsch who also plays mandolin and pedal steel and their veteran drummer Terry Lonergan. Hiss Golden Messenger is an American folk music band, originating from Durham, North Carolina, led by MC Taylor. The band was formed by Mike MC Taylor and Scott Hirsch in 2007. The band's early recordings were released through Taylor's own recording label, Heaven & Earth Magic Recording Company. This was followed by their international debut album, Bad Debt, in 2010, released via. Album No 5 from Hiss Golden Messenger and their first for the celebrated indie label Merge is, like its predecessor Haw, largely a full-band affair, moving away from the acoustic country-folk of their early records, though not dispensing with it entirely. On Mahogany Dread, the combination of MC Taylors Dylanesque voice, the despairing lyrics, the gently rippling guitars, and the mid-pace propulsion of the rhythm section puts the music within waving distance of the War on Drugss cosmic MOR.
