Short intro
Revival is the first album by American singer-songwriter Gillian Welch, released on April 9, 1996. The plant described in the song, Acony Bell appears to be Shortia galacifolia, also known as the Oconee bells. Welch later began her own record label under the name Acony. To celebrate the album's 20th anniversary, Welch re-released Revival as Boots No 1: The Official Revival Bootleg which included demos, outtakes and alternate versions of the tracks in addition to eight new songs. Other albums by Gilli. Released in 1996, Revival is Gillian Welchs graceful and self-assured debut. Her devotion to bluegrass and old-time American music is evident across the album and she pays homage to the form not through studied mimicry but by adding her own work to the tradition. One could easily mistake Orphan Girl, Barroom Girls, and By the Mark for traditional Appalachian tunes, which is a compliment to her vivid lyrics, storytelling skill, and the depth of these vocal performances. It takes a closer listen to Revival to realize that Welch and her partner, David Rawlings, are not mere revivalists in the old-timey style Welch's debts to artists of the past are obvious and clearly acknowledged, but there's a maturity, intelligence, and keen eye for detail in Welch's songs you wouldn't expect from someone simply trying to ape. Orphan Girl Welch arrived in Nashville in the summer of 1992, after two years at Berklee studying under songwriting guru Pat Pattison. Welch had been writing songs since childhood. Her adoptive parents, writers for the Carol Burnett Show, sent her to a progressive independent elementary school where students had daily folk song sing-alongs. It was a way for her to be able to stop working, so shed have an income and focus on her music, she says. She knew just who to call. In the spring of 1994, Gillian Welch showed up, guitar in hand, to a white two-story stucco house near Nashvilles Music Row. Gillian Welch's timeless Appalachian-style classic Orphan Girl, originally from the 1996 Revival album. This is a very beautiful stripped-down Welch. Gillian Welch and her musical partner David Rawlings hail from Los Angeles and Rhode Island, respectively, but they arrived on the indie folk scene in 1996 as if theyd just melted out of Depression-era Appalachian Mountain ice. The tales of moonshiners and brothel girls matched the old-timey twang of Welch, and didnt seem forced in the least. Its no surprise that a debut like Revival marked the beginning of a spectacular career. Josh Jackson.
