Short intro
Indeed, Atzmon's decision to name his band the Orient House after the East Jerusalem office of the Palestinian Authority is itself an indication that he wants to express a political message with his music. Gilad Atzmon, the expatriate Israeli saxophonist, has somehow found time to finish his first novel along with fulfilling one of the busiest gigging schedules on the British scene, being a member of the late-lamented Ian Dury's Blockheads, and much else besides. This album and Atzmon's book, A Guide to the Perplexed, may have close ties intellectually but are worlds apart emotionally. Exile is undoubtedly Atzmon's best-resolved album so far, a rich and eloquent flight across the music of many lands notably Palestine, Romania, Israel, Britain, Italy and the US with an expanded Orient House Ensemble including the extraordinary Palestinian singer Reem Kelani. Gilad Atzmon. Dal'ouna on the Return, 04:47. Ouz, 07:41. Orient House, 06:01. Land of Canaan, 05:58. Exile, 04:35. Gilad Atzmon's Exile holds true to its title, a bold statement on both the injustice of the Palestinian situation and the Israeli leader's own expatriate status. Atzmon very clearly enunciates his view that Israeli history and policy has resulted in the forcible mass disenfranchisement of Palestinians and ironically so, given the history of persecution of the Jewish people. In the introduction, the core quartet rides on pianist Frank Harrison's cascading ripples, Atzmon stepping up for a heavy Coltrane-ish minor key devotional. And then, in a rapid turn, the tune becomes more jaunty, swinging across ostinato bass octaves and regularly convening for an upbeat theme.
