Short intro

Dhafer Youssef. Digital Prophecy. Tunisia-born singer and oudist Dhafer Youssef should be recording for ECM. His albums have a similar spiritual, centered quality to the work appearing on that label, and his work on this album with some of Norway's top jazz players points completely in that direction. He lives very much on the cutting edge, taking things even further than he did on 2001's Electric Sufi. See contact information and details about Dhafer Youssef. Youssef developed an interest in jazz at an early age and clandestinely listened to it during his education at a Qur'anic school. He later left Tunisia to a jazz career and has lived in Europe since 1990, usually in Paris or Vienna. He also works in avant garde and world music where he has been nominated for awards. He was a guest artist on the Norwegian jazz artist Bugge Wesseltoft's album FiLM iNG. Youssef has also performed with Uri Caine, Tigran Hamasyan, Jon Hassell, Markus Stockhausen, Nguyên Lê, Omar Sosa and Hüsnü Şenlendirici. Back in the studios, Dhafer Youssef records Digital Prophecy in 2003. The search of new sonorities intensifies and the result is exhilarating. The symbiosis between the Oud and electric sonorities is more natural. In 2001, Dhafer Youssef recorded Electric Sufi his second album with Enja Records. As its name suggests, this marks the musicians first experience with electronic music. For this project, he collaborated with Wolfgang Muthspiel Guitar, Markus Stockhausen Trumpet, Deepak Ram Bansuri, Dieter Ilg Bass, Mino Cinelu Percussion, Rodericke Packe Electronics as well as Will Calhoun Drums and Doug Wimbish Bass. With flowing dramatic ardor, Diaphanes exudes a strong oud aroma. Its earthy, simple, relaxed, and suggestively enhanced with dripping and aerial electronic effects from Eivind Aarset, who also gleams on guitar. As Yoda would say of the crescendo caravanesque march of Aya -which first exhibit the leaders haunting Arabic vocals- Rich in melodic, rhythmic, chordal and harmonic subtleties, insinuated in sensual Middle Eastern over and un. Dhafer Youssef Digital Prophecy Review. Released 2003. Digital Prophecy traces a journey from Tunisia's heat to Norway's cool. This recording may also be viewed as the latest in an ongoing dialogue between Norway and the rest of the world Nils Petter Molvaer's trumpet sound has long seemed like a soft muezzin call, Eivind Aarset's guitar like a keening djinn, Arve Henriksen's trumpet shakuhachi-like and so on.
