Unplugged is a 1992 album by Eric Clapton, recorded at Bray Studios, England in front of an audience for the MTV Unplugged television series. It includes a version of the successful 1991 single Tears in Heaven and an acoustic version of Layla. It won six Grammy awards at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards in 1993 and became the bestselling live album of all time, and Clapton's bestselling album, selling 26 million copies worldwide. It was recorded live in England for the MTV Unplugged series. The album includes an acoustic version of the hit single Tears in Heaven and a heavily reworked acoustic version of Layla. Clapton earned three Grammy Awards for the album: Album of the Year, Best Rock Male Vocal, and Best Rock Song he earned another three for the record and song Tears in Heaven. Clapton performed the show in front of a small audience on January 16, 1992 at Bray Film Studios in Windsor, England. In 2000 Q magazine placed Unp. Also in 1991, Clapton's young son Conor died in a tragic accident. The guitarist wrote Tears in Heaven as a tribute to his late son and, via its inclusion on the 1991 soundtrack to Rush, it became a hit single and, later, a centerpiece to the Unplugged set. Eric Clapton, whose chart dominance had started to wane a little bit, decided to take advantage of the increasingly popular series. The end result was one that would both be a victory for Clapton himself as well as the 'MTV Unplugged' series, as the disc immediately shot at No. 1 in six countries, was the top selling album of the year in Canada, and became the No. 30 selling disc for the entire decade. In 2004, Clapton sold the Martin 000-42 acoustic guitar he played in the 'Unplugged' special at an auction for just shy of 800,000, which was the record for the highest sale price of a Martin guitar at the time.
