Short intro
The String Quartet No. 1 by American composer Elliott Carter is a work for string quartet written during a year spent in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson, Arizona from 195051. To some extent, it can be said that this was his first major breakthrough work as a composer. The piece was premiered on 26 February 1953 at Columbia University, performed by the Walden Quartet of the University of Illinois. Elliott Carter 1908 - 2012 String quartet No. 1 1951 Juilliard String Quartet I. Fantasia: Maestoso Allegro scorrevole II. Allegro scorrevole 13:16. The Walden String Quartet was a chamber music ensemble formed in 1934 by members of the Cleveland Orchestra. It was originally the idea of violinist Homer Schmitt and cellist Robert Swenson, who met in 1927. They recruited violinist Bernard Goodman and violist Leroy Collins for the original group. The viola chair changed many times until John Garvey joined in 1948. By 1935 the quartet were featured in half-hour network radio programs. PROGRAM NOTE String Quartet No. I establishes its almost constantly diversified textures by starting with a solo cello, which is then joined by each of the other instruments, each presenting a different musical character at a different speed. These four different ideas recur in contexts of still other ideas, each with its own rhythmic identity. The ending of the first movement comes when the four main ideas are presented simultaneously and dissolve into a whirling second movement, which is intemrpted by a dramatic statement, then resumes and fades out to a pause. to the Walden Quartet of the University of lllinois. The writing of the quartets spanned the peak years of the avant-garde, from 1951 to 1995, and Carter developed his own systems and strategies, including his innovation of metric modulation, the use of chronometric and psychological time, and the characterization of the quartet's parts in dramatic dialogues. Elliott Carter Composer, Pacifica Quartet Performer Format: Audio CD. Carter and his audience create another microcosm of the America experience. People on Saturday, the concluding performance of the Carter celebration, struggled to find seats, so concentrated and intense was this sophisticated gathering. His music was being conducted by one of the world's great conductors and a fervent admirer, and it is deceiving to call the Juilliard players a student orchestra. To my surprise it won the Liège Prize and the Walden Quartet became the first of many to play itRelated to Elliott Carter - The Walden Quartet Of The University Of Illinois - String Quartet
