Human vestiges include built structures and field systems, the cleits and the traditional Highland stone houses. They feature the vulnerable remains of a subsistence economy based on the products of birds, agriculture and sheep farming. St Kilda was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1986. St Kilda Scottish Gaelic: Hiort is an isolated archipelago situated 40 miles 64 km west-northwest of North Uist in the North Atlantic Ocean. It contains the westernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The largest island is Hirta, whose sea cliffs are the highest in the United Kingdom. Three other islands Dùn, Soay and Boreray were also used for grazing and seabird hunting. The islands are administratively a part of the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar local authority area. The island archipelago of St Kilda Gaelic: Hiort is often celebrated as the most remote location in the British isles. Forty miles from the Outer Hebrides, the islands rise up dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, the remains of a long extinct volcano. The main island of Hirta contains the highest sea cliffs in UK, and the remains of a village, its community evacuated in the 1930s after a millenium of continual human habitation on the island.
