Johannes Ciconia c. 1370 between 10 June and 13 July 1412 was an important Flemish composer and music theorist of the late Middle Ages. He was born in Liège, but worked most of his adult life in Italy, particularly in the service of the papal chapels in Rome and later and most importantly at Padua Cathedral. Dufay and others moved away from the restrictions of the Ars Antiqua and Ars Nova periods by adding free forms to the secular music. The composers and singers from the Franco-Flemish school began to travel around Europe in the mid-1400s. Heinrich Isaac was a lieder composer of the fifteenth century and Hans Leo Hassler, Johann Hermann Shein, and Ludwig Senfl worked in the sixteenth century. Orlando di Lasso was a Flemish composer who wrote more than 2,000 chansons, motets, and masses in German, Italian, and French. Dufay wrote a considerable quantity of church music. These compositions include a number of Mass settings, with one based on the most popular secular cantus firmus Lhomme armé, one on his own secular ballade Se la face ay pale and another on his Marian antiphon Ave regina caelorum. He asked for the Marian antiphon-motet Ave regina caelorum to be sung on his death-bed. Dufay wrote more than 70 chansons, setting verses in the fashionable forms of the time-the ballade, the virelai and rondeauRelated to Ciconia • Dufay • Isaac And Others - Capella Antiqua, Munich - Ceremonial Music Of The Renaissance
