The album is every bit as enchanting as its predecessor, but there's a sharper focus on dal Forno's songwriting skills this time around. Her vocals aren't always quite as shrouded in effects, and the recordings don't sound as lo-fi or distorted. Fast Moving Cars previously issued as a 7 earlier in the year features a dubby rhythm, gloomy vocals, a very sparse amount of keyboard, and a slowly swirling layer of echo that ends up being one of the most significant elements of the song. Technically speaking, Australian musician Carla dal Forno is a singer-songwriter, but her solo debut album shows her mindset is closer to that of a lighting director or set designer. Dal Fornos approach falls closer in spirit to ambient music. Only one song on You Know What Its Like emphasizes her voice to the point where youd consider it the lead vocal, and she doesnt even sing on half the tracks. She obviously takes after Grouper in the way she occupies the sumptuous gloom of her songs like a ghost, but her grandiosity and shamanic presence suggest a subdued modern answer to an outsider-art icon like Moondog.
