Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America Volume One: The Early Years is a 1961 American comedy album with music and dialogue written by Stan Freberg, released as Capitol WSW-1573 in 1961. Freberg satirizes episodes of the history of the United States from 1492 until the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. The album combined dialogue and song in a musical theater format. Billy May orchestrated and conducted the music, with the Jud Conlon Singers providing background vocals. His best-known works include St. George and the Dragonet, Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America, his role on the television series Time for Beany 1950-1955, and a number of classic television commercials. When Stan Freberg released The United States of America in 1961, it was one of the first comedy concept albums. and perhaps the funniest musical comedy never performed onstage. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band established the album as opposed to random selection of cuts as an art form in it's own right. not to mention nearly a decade before the like of The Who and David Bowie started telling stories in their albums. fast forward 35 years. things didn't go quite as Freberg had planned. it was intended to. make every song a track in it's own right. that may not sound like much, but. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Freberg and his all-star company take on some of the greatest tales and incidents from the annals of U. The luminous cast boasts players from Freberg's hit novelty 45s and his short-lived, self-titled weekly radio series, such as Peter Leeds and June Foray, alongside the equally lauded voice-over talents of Jesse White and Paul Frees, and the musical director Billy May.
