It is one of the earliest releases by a British punk band preceded by The Damned's New Rose in October 1976, and both the Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the U. and the first two singles by The Vibrators in November 1976. Spiral Scratch-the four-song debut EP on which Boredom appeared-was a revelation. British punk rock was brand new at that point: when Spiral Scratch was released on January 29, 1977, the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the U. was barely two months old, the Damned, the Vibrators, and the Stranglers had some singles out, and that was it. All those bands were signed to at-least-sort-of-legitimate record labels. Meanwhile, the Buzzcocks scraped together the funds to have 1000 copies of Spiral Scratch pressed themselves, and called their otherwise nonexistent label New Hormones. Spiral Scratch's hand-pressed, blurry black-and-white sleeve housed four tracks - each one a uniquely compelling experience, marrying raw, youthful zest with belligerent intelligence. The EP's release achieved several things at once. It opened up the independent scene, making . labels the natural springboard for aspiring musicians.
