Odessa is the sixth studio album by the Bee Gees, originally released on 30 March 1969. Regarded as the most significant of the group's Sixties albums, it was released as a double vinyl record, initially in an opulent red flocked cover with gold lettering. An ambitious project, originally intended as a concept album on the loss of a fictional ship in 1899, it created tension and disagreements in the band regarding the album's direction finally, a dispute over which song to release as a single led to. My older sister buying the Bee Gees 45's was my introduction to this amazing and criminally marginalized band. Many highlights here, Robin's lead vocals on Odessa, Black Diamond and Lamplight. Barry sounds amazing on Melody Fair. Sumptuous melodies abound, with plenty of grand piano and orchestral lushness. Rhino's 3xCD reissue of the Bee Gees' ornate and ambitious 1969 album includes mono and stereo mixes and an extra disc of demos and previously unreleased tracks. Less than two years after leaving Australia and scoring their first Anglo-American hit, New York Mining Disaster 1941, the Bee Gees had matured to the point where they they had the confidence to write neo-classical instrumentals with titles like Seven Seas Symphony and With All Nations International Anthem. Odessa is a studio album by the Bee Gees, released in 1969. It is their sixth album, the group's fourth album released internationally, and their first released as a double LP. Odessa is noted in Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Odessa would be the final album for the band's original incarnation. Guitarist Vince Melouney would pursue other interests, and Robin Gibb would leave the band over personal and artistic differences with brother Barry Gibb. Barry and Maurice would continue to record with drummer Colin Petersen as the Bee Gees, but disintegra. On the phone from his Florida home, Barry Gibb is racking his brain.
